Clarke Prep completed the 2016 season with a 4-8 record. With their 1-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class AA region two, the Gators earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Last year Clarke Prep reached the semi-finals before falling to a very good Escambia Academy team by the score of 54-24. Clarke Prep took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2009. The Gators lost as many games as in any season since 1994. Since 2010, Clarke Prep has gone a combined 54-31. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class AA over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Clarke Prep has managed to compile a record of 179-115. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class AA and 9th in the AISA. The Gators are led by head coach Billy Hamilton who is entering his thirty-third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 226-136 over the past thirty-two seasons at Clarke Prep. Under his direction the Gators have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-six times. They have won six region crowns with Coach Hamilton. Coach Hamilton has won five state championships at Clarke Prep, the last coming in 2005. The Clarke Prep Gators will play in Class AA region two during the 2017 season. Region two will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. The Gators will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region two this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2009 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2017. The Gators open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Pike Liberal Arts on Friday, August 25 at Dewight Ward Field. Last year the Pike Liberal Arts Patriots finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in second place in Class AAA region two. The Patriots lost in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs to Lee-Scott Academy by a score of 42-0. Clarke Prep and Pike Liberal Arts have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Gators have a 1-3-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2016 with Pike Liberal Arts winning by a score of 19-6. Clarke Prep returns AISA All-State Junior defensive lineman Dylan Thomas. He was named to the first team last season. The Gators also return Senior running back Gavin Caine.
